After watching for several years the coaches' parade of soccer teams, I have come to think that finally, there is always a kind of leadership "attrition".
They start winning championship after championship, and suddenly, it starts the decline, why is that? And without any desire for being the expert on the subject, comes to my mind the following hypothesis: "Leadership is worn, unless we change our leadership strategy."
In a football team, year after year, league after league, the objective is the same, win, win, win all the possible championships (at least that has been at FC Barcelona), for others is to avoid descent or seek a promotion, however, the latter two cases have a special motivation component, that the leader does not "inject".
Continuing with the case of the ones that every year are entrusted win championships, let's say, the first year, in the
Championship Final Game , it comes to the mind of the coach (case of Guardiola) to request the recording of a video to motivate his boys ... But... What happens in the next Championship Final Game?, Those same guys who were motivated by the video from the last year, now they know about the video, they expect that video, may be it's not a surprise for most of them, but they still expect it, they expect what their coach has prepared again... But then comes the third year, and surely some of them may think, "surely the coach is going to show us his motivational video, I think that has no influence, we can motivate ourselves, one each other, as a team ..."
What happened? It may not have happened, but I thought about it, is it happening or not? And bringing it to our trenches, is it happening with our leadership? Did you motivate your team with a Sunday barbecue for each milestone achieved in the project? Now the team is not motivated by the barbecue, this no longer has an effect, and the team members have no desire to go to the celebration because it has simply been always the same... You need to reinvent our LEADERSHIP.
I have showed here an example, the top of the iceberg of what is our leadership, we know that leadership goes beyond the celebration, it's also about support, being close to your team, support them, helping remove the barriers, meet the man/woman who is in our team ... And for that reason, our reinventing our leadership involves not only changing the way we celebrate each milestone, but the way we approach our team, how we assign tasks, how we estimate tasks effort, how we interact, how we celebrate different, how we do coaching, how we promote the collective knowledge, in short, there is no recipe, the most important issue is to prevent the erosion of our leadership strategies.
